How to Combine PDF Files on Android and iPhone

To combine PDF files on phone, open the PDFNova Merge PDF tool in your mobile browser, pick the PDFs from your storage, drag them into order and tap merge. The joined file saves to your phone. It works the same way on Android and iPhone, and you do not need to install an app.

Phones add a few small complications that computers do not have: files hide in different folders, downloads are harder to find, and memory is limited. This guide covers all of that so the job takes one minute instead of ten.

Before you start: find your files

The hardest part on a phone is usually locating the PDFs, not merging them. Documents arrive through chat apps, email, downloads and cloud storage, and each one keeps them somewhere different.

  • Email attachments: save the attachment to your phone storage first. A file that is only previewed inside the mail app cannot be picked by a browser.
  • Chat apps: download the document inside the chat, then save or share it to your files or downloads folder if it does not appear in the picker.
  • Cloud storage: most phones show cloud drives in the file picker. If a file refuses to load, make it available offline first.
  • Photos of documents: these are images, not PDFs. Turn them into a PDF first with Image to PDF, or capture fresh pages with the Camera Scanner.

A quick tip that saves time: move everything you want to join into one folder, and rename the files 01, 02, 03 in the order you want them. Then the merge step is nearly automatic.

How to combine PDF files on phone, step by step

  1. Open your browser. Use the normal browser on your Android phone or iPhone and go to the Merge PDF page on PDFNova.
  2. Tap to add files. Your phone’s file picker opens. Browse to the folder that holds your PDFs.
  3. Select two or more PDFs. On most phones you can long-press one file and then tap the others to select several at once. If your picker only allows one at a time, add them one by one.
  4. Arrange the order. Press and drag each file to its position. If you numbered the file names, use sort A to Z instead.
  5. Tap merge. The tool joins the files into one PDF on your device.
  6. Download. The combined PDF is saved directly to your phone, usually in the downloads folder.
  7. Open and check. Scroll through the result once before you share it.

PDFNova processes files in your browser, so your documents are not uploaded to a server. That is helpful on mobile data, because you are not sending large files back and forth, and it is reassuring when the files are personal.

Android and iPhone: what is different

The tool itself is identical on both systems. The differences are in how each phone handles files.

Step Android iPhone
Picking files System file picker, usually with recent files, downloads and cloud drives Files picker, with phone storage and cloud locations
Selecting several Long-press one file, then tap more Use the select option in the picker, then tap each file
Where the result goes Downloads folder in most browsers Downloads location chosen in your browser settings
Sharing afterwards Open the file and use the share option Open the file and use the share option

Exact menu names change between phone models and system versions, so do not worry if your screen looks a little different. The idea is always the same: pick, order, merge, download.

Built-in options on your phone

Some phones can join PDFs with their own file manager or with a print-to-PDF feature. These can work for a simple case, but they vary a lot between brands and versions, and they often give you little control over the order.

A browser tool behaves the same on every phone, which matters if you switch devices or need to explain the steps to a family member or colleague. It also means you do not fill your storage with another app that you use twice a year.

Troubleshooting on mobile

I cannot see my PDF in the file picker

The file is probably still inside another app. Open it there and choose save, download or share to files. Then return to the browser and tap add again.

The page reloads or freezes during the merge

Your phone is running low on memory. Close other apps and browser tabs, then repeat. If the PDFs are large scans, merge them in two smaller groups, then merge the two results.

I cannot find the downloaded file

Open your browser’s downloads list, or look in the downloads folder of your file manager. Sorting by most recent puts the new file on top. Rename it straight away so you can find it later.

The combined file is too large to send

Chat and email services limit attachment size, and the limit differs from one service to another. Check the limit shown by the service you are using, then shrink the file with Compress PDF. Scanned and photo-heavy PDFs get much smaller. Text-only PDFs change very little.

A file asks for a password

Protected PDFs ask for their password when opened. Enter the password you were given. A file whose password you do not know cannot be merged.

Useful follow-up tasks

Merging is often one step in a longer job. If your documents started as Word files, convert them first. Our guide to converting Word to PDF for free explains the reliable ways to do it, including from a phone.

If you later need to take the combined file apart, for example to send only one section, see how to split a PDF into separate pages. And if you sometimes work on an office computer where apps cannot be installed, the same approach applies there, as described in how to merge PDFs without installing any software.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine PDF files on my phone without an app?

Yes. A browser-based tool runs inside the browser you already have. Open the page, add your files and download the result. Nothing needs to be installed.

How do I merge PDF files on Android for free?

Open the Merge PDF tool in your Android browser, select your files from the file picker, arrange them and tap merge. PDFNova is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark.

How do I put two PDFs together on an iPhone?

Save both PDFs to your phone’s files first, open the Merge PDF tool in your browser, choose both files, set which comes first and tap merge. The joined PDF saves to your downloads location.

Will merging on a phone use a lot of mobile data?

Very little. The page itself has to load, but your documents are processed on the phone and are not uploaded, so the size of your PDFs does not count against your data.

Next time you have several documents to send as one, open Merge PDF on your phone and join them in a few taps.
