You can edit PDF free of charge in your browser with PDFNova’s PDF Editor. It lets you add text, cover and retype existing lines, highlight, draw, add shapes, insert images and leave sticky notes, then download the edited file. There is no sign-up and no watermark, and the document stays on your device.
Before you start, it helps to know what “editing a PDF” really means. A PDF is not like a Word file where text flows from line to line. Understanding that one point saves a lot of frustration, so this guide begins there and then moves to the steps.
What editing a PDF can and cannot do
A PDF is a finished layout. Every word has a fixed position on the page, a bit like ink on paper. That is why PDFs look the same on every device, and also why they are harder to change than a document in a word processor.
Editors therefore work by adding things on top of the page or by replacing small parts of it. The PDFNova editor is built for these everyday changes. It is not a full layout reflow editor, so if you delete a sentence in the middle of a paragraph, the lines below will not move up to fill the gap.
| Task | Works well in the editor? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Type into a form that has no fillable fields | Yes | Add text boxes over the blanks |
| Correct a date, name or number | Yes | Cover the line and retype it |
| Mark important passages | Yes | Highlight tool |
| Circle, underline or point at something | Yes | Freehand drawing and shapes |
| Add a logo, stamp or photo | Yes | Insert image |
| Leave a comment for a colleague | Yes | Sticky notes |
| Rewrite whole paragraphs or change the layout | No | Edit the original source file, or convert to Word first |
How to edit a PDF free in your browser, step by step
- Open the PDF Editor on your phone, tablet or computer.
- Choose the PDF from your device. If it has an open password, type it when asked.
- Go to the page you want to change.
- Pick a tool: text, cover and retype, highlight, draw, shape, image or sticky note.
- Click or tap on the page where the change belongs, then type, draw or place your item.
- Adjust the position and size until it lines up with the content around it.
- Repeat on other pages as needed.
- Download the edited PDF. It saves directly to your device.
- Open the downloaded file and check each change at normal zoom.
Keep your original file. The editor gives you a new copy, so you can always go back if you spot a mistake later.
The main tools and when to use each
Add text
Use this for filling in blanks, adding a missing line, writing a reference number or labelling a diagram. Match the text size to the surrounding text so the addition looks natural. Our detailed guide on how to add text to a PDF covers alignment and form-filling tricks.
Cover and retype a line
This is the practical way to fix a typo or update a detail in existing text. The old line is covered and you type the new wording in its place. It works best for short changes that fit in the same space. Use it only on documents you are entitled to change, and never to alter someone else’s official or signed document.
Highlight
Highlighting is ideal for study notes, contracts under review and reports where you want a reader to notice a figure. See how to highlight text in a PDF for a simple colour system and advice for scanned pages.
Draw and shapes
Freehand drawing suits quick marks such as ticks, circles and arrows. Shapes give you tidy boxes and lines, which look better on anything you will send to a client.
Insert images
Place a logo on a letter, a photo on a form or a stamp image on a page. Resize by dragging until it fits the space.
Sticky notes
Notes let you comment without covering the content. They are handy for feedback on drafts and for marking student work, a use we cover in our PDF tips for teachers.
When another tool is the better choice
Not every change belongs in the editor. PDFNova has separate tools for jobs that are really about pages or content conversion.
- Large text changes. If you need to rewrite paragraphs, convert the file with PDF to Word, edit the .docx and save it as PDF again. This works for text-based PDFs with simple layouts. Complex layouts need clean-up afterwards.
- Moving, deleting or rotating pages. Use Organize Pages, which shows every page as a thumbnail.
- Signing. A dedicated signing tool lets you draw, type or upload a signature and place it precisely.
- Interactive forms. If the PDF has real fillable fields, a form-filling tool reads them for you, which is faster than adding text boxes.
You can browse all PDF tools to find the one that matches your task.
Troubleshooting
I cannot select or change the existing text
The file is probably a scan, which is a picture of text. You can still add text, highlights and drawings on top. To turn a scan into real text, you would need OCR first.
My retyped text looks different from the original
The original font may not be available, so the replacement uses a similar one. Adjust the size, keep the edit short, and retype the whole line, not half of it, so the style is consistent across the line.
The page is hard to edit on a small screen
Zoom in before placing text, and turn the phone sideways for wide pages. For long editing sessions a laptop is more comfortable, though short fixes are fine on a phone.
The file will not open
Check the size, since the default maximum is 100 MB, and make sure the download finished. Locked files need their password.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit a PDF for free without a watermark?
Yes. PDFNova is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark to the files you edit and download.
Is it safe to edit confidential PDFs in a browser?
PDFNova processes files in your browser, so your documents are not uploaded to a server. The editing happens on your own device, which suits contracts and personal papers.
Can I edit a PDF on my phone?
Yes. The editor works in modern mobile browsers. Zoom in to place text accurately, and check the downloaded file before sending it.
Can I change the text in a scanned PDF?
Not directly, because a scan is an image. You can cover a line and type new text over it, or run OCR to get editable text and rebuild the document from there.
Most PDF changes are small: a line to fix, a blank to fill, a point to mark. Open the PDF Editor, make the change and download your file in a few minutes.
