To split PDF into separate pages, open your file in the PDFNova Split PDF tool, choose the “every N pages” option and set it to 1. Each page becomes its own PDF, and all of them download together in a ZIP file. The file is processed on your device, so nothing is uploaded.
Splitting sounds like one task, but people mean different things by it. Sometimes you want every page as a single file. Sometimes you want chapters, or just pages 4 to 9. This guide shows which option to use for each case.
Three ways to split, and when to use each
The Split PDF tool offers three modes. Picking the right one saves a lot of manual work.
| Mode | What you enter | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Every N pages | A number, such as 1, 2 or 10 | Equal parts of that length | One file per page, double-sided forms, fixed-length sets |
| Page ranges | Ranges such as 1-3, 5, 8-10 | Parts that match the ranges you typed | Chapters, sections, uneven parts |
| Pick from thumbnails | Taps or clicks on page previews | The pages you selected | When you need to see the pages to decide |
For one file per page, “every N pages” with N set to 1 is the quickest. You do not have to type anything else, even for a document with hundreds of pages.
How to split PDF into separate pages, step by step
- Open the Split PDF tool in your browser, on a phone or a computer.
- Add your PDF. If the file is password protected, enter its password when asked.
- Choose “every N pages”. Type 1 so that each part holds a single page.
- Start the split. The tool creates one PDF for each page.
- Download the ZIP. Because there are several output files, they come packed in one ZIP file.
- Unpack the ZIP. On a computer, open or extract it. On a phone, tap it in your file manager, which can usually open ZIP files directly.
Your original PDF is not changed. The split creates new files, so you can always go back to the complete document.
Splitting by page ranges
If you need sections instead of single pages, switch to the range mode. Type the ranges separated by commas. For example, 1-3, 5, 8-10 describes pages 1 to 3, page 5 on its own, and pages 8 to 10.
A few rules keep ranges tidy:
- Use the page positions in the file, not the numbers printed on the pages. A report whose printed page 1 comes after a cover and a contents page starts at position 3.
- Write ranges from low to high, such as 4-9.
- Check the total page count first so your last range does not go past the end.
If your goal is to pull out a handful of pages and discard the rest, the range and thumbnail modes are what you want. We cover that in detail in how to extract specific pages from a PDF.
Real situations where splitting helps
Scanned bundles
Office scanners often put a whole stack of paper into one PDF. If that stack holds ten separate invoices or certificates, splitting gives each one its own file. Use every 1 page for single-page documents, or every 2 pages if each document has a front and a back.
Forms that want one document per upload field
Application portals often ask for each document separately: degree in one field, transcript in another. If you received everything as one PDF, split it by ranges that match each document.
Sending part of a long file
Nobody wants a 200-page manual when they asked for one chapter. Splitting also helps when a file is too heavy to attach. Our guide on how to split a large PDF into smaller files for email explains how to choose sensible part sizes.
Study notes and slides
Students often split a lecture pack by week or topic. Smaller files open faster on a phone and are easier to find later.
After splitting: name, shrink, convert
The pieces come out with generic names, so rename them while you still remember what each one is. A clear pattern such as name-document-part works well for uploads.
Single pages from a scan can still be heavy. If a portal has a strict limit, compress the page after splitting. See how to compress a PDF to 100 KB or 200 KB for realistic ways to reach a small target.
If you actually need pictures instead of PDFs, for example to place a page in a presentation, use PDF to JPG. It exports each page as a JPG or PNG image.
And if you split too much, you can put pieces back together in any order with Merge PDF.
Troubleshooting
I got one ZIP file instead of PDFs
That is expected. When a split produces several files, they are delivered as a ZIP. Open or extract it to see the individual PDFs.
My phone cannot open the ZIP
Most phones open ZIP files from the built-in file manager. Find the file in your downloads folder and tap it there instead of tapping the browser notification.
The parts are not where I expected
Check whether you counted printed page numbers instead of real positions. Cover pages and Roman-numbered introductions shift everything. The thumbnail mode helps here because you can see each page.
The file will not load
The default maximum file size is 100 MB. Also confirm that the file opens in a normal PDF viewer. If it is protected, you need its password.
The split pages are still large
A page that is a high-resolution scan stays large after splitting. Compress it afterwards. Pages that are mostly text are already small and will not shrink much.
Frequently asked questions
How do I separate PDF pages for free?
Open the Split PDF tool, add your file, choose every 1 page and download the ZIP. PDFNova is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark to the pages.
Can I split a PDF into separate pages on my phone?
Yes. The tool runs in a mobile browser. The steps are the same, and the ZIP opens from your phone’s file manager.
Does splitting a PDF reduce quality?
No. Splitting copies the existing pages into new files without re-compressing images or changing text.
Is it safe to split a confidential PDF online?
PDFNova processes files in your browser, so your documents are not uploaded to a server. The pages stay on your device from start to finish.
Open Split PDF, set it to every 1 page, and you will have a separate file for each page in moments.
