How to Extract Specific Pages From a PDF

To extract pages from PDF, open the file in the PDFNova Split PDF tool, then either type the page range you want, such as 4-9, or tap the pages you need in the thumbnail view. Download the result and you have a new, smaller PDF with only those pages. Your original file stays exactly as it was.

Extracting is the right move whenever a document contains more than the other person needs to see: one chapter of a book, the signature page of a contract, a single month from a year of statements, or your own certificate from a scanned batch.

Two ways to think about it: keep or remove

There are two routes to the same result. You can select the pages you want to keep, or you can remove the pages you do not want. Which one is faster depends on the numbers.

Your situation Faster route Tool
You need 3 pages from a 60-page file Select the pages to keep Split PDF
You need everything except 2 pages Remove the unwanted pages Delete Pages
You need one continuous section Type a single range Split PDF
You need scattered pages and must see them first Pick from thumbnails Split PDF
You need pages in a new order Reorder, then delete the rest Organize Pages

How to extract pages from PDF with Split PDF

  1. Open Split PDF in your browser and add your document. A protected file asks for its password first.
  2. Decide how to select. Use page ranges if you know the numbers. Use the thumbnail view if you would rather look at the pages.
  3. Enter the pages. In range mode, type something like 4-9 for a section, or 1-3, 5, 8-10 for several pieces. In thumbnail mode, tap each page you want.
  4. Run the split. The tool builds new PDF files from your selection.
  5. Download. A single result downloads as a PDF. If your selection produces several files, they arrive together in a ZIP.
  6. Open the result and confirm it holds the right pages before you send it.

The reverse method: delete what you do not need

When you want to keep most of the document, removing is quicker than selecting. Open the file in Delete Pages, click the pages you want to drop or type their range, and download the rest as a new PDF.

This is handy for taking out a cover sheet, an advertisement page, a blank back side from a scan, or an appendix that is not relevant to the reader.

Page position is not the same as printed page number

This is the most common cause of a wrong extract. The tool counts pages by their position in the file: first page is 1, second is 2, and so on. The number printed at the bottom of a page may be different.

A report may have a cover, a contents page and a preface before the page marked “1”. In that case, printed page 1 is position 4 in the file. If someone tells you “send me pages 12 to 15”, check whether they mean printed numbers, then find the matching positions.

The thumbnail view removes the guesswork. You see each page and tap the ones you need, so the printed numbers stop mattering.

Practical examples

One chapter from a textbook or manual

Find the first and last page of the chapter, type that single range and download. The smaller file opens faster on a phone and is easier to share with classmates or colleagues.

The signed page of a contract

Sometimes only the signature page has to be returned. Extract that page alone. If you need to send it with the first page as well, type both, for example 1, 14.

Your documents from a shared scan

When an office scans several people’s papers into one file, pick your pages from the thumbnails. You avoid sending other people’s information along with yours.

Selected slides from a deck

If the pages you need should appear in a different order from the original, arrange them first. Our guide on how to rearrange pages in a PDF shows how to drag pages into a new sequence, after which you can remove the leftovers.

Does extracting hide the other pages?

Yes, properly. The new file contains only the pages you selected. The other pages are not hidden inside it, because they were never copied into it. This is different from covering content with a shape, which may leave the original underneath.

Extracting does not remove sensitive details that sit on the pages you keep. If a kept page shows an account number or address that the reader should not see, black it out with Redact PDF, apply the redaction, and check the saved file again.

Checklist before sharing an extract

  • The page count matches what you intended.
  • The first and last pages are the correct ones, with no sentence cut off in the middle of a section.
  • No extra page from someone else’s document slipped in.
  • The file name describes the content, such as report-chapter-3.
  • The size fits the limit shown on the upload page or by your email service.

On the last point, a few scanned pages can still be heavy. If a form demands a very small file, see how to compress a PDF to 100 KB or 200 KB. If the problem is that the whole document is too big to send in one piece, cutting it into parts is the better answer, as explained in how to split a large PDF into smaller files for email.

Frequently asked questions

How do I save only certain pages of a PDF?

Open the PDF in a split tool, select the pages by range or by tapping thumbnails, and download the new file. Only the selected pages are saved in it.

Can I extract pages from a PDF without Acrobat?

Yes. A browser-based tool does this without any installed program. PDFNova is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark.

Can I extract pages from a password-protected PDF?

Only if you know the password. The tool asks for it when the file is opened. It cannot open a file whose password is unknown.

Will the extracted pages lose quality?

No. The pages are copied as they are. Text stays selectable and images keep their resolution.

Are my files uploaded when I extract pages?

No. PDFNova processes files in your browser, so your documents are not uploaded to a server.

Whenever a full document is more than the reader needs, open Split PDF, choose your pages and send only what matters.
