To split large PDF files for email, open the document in the PDFNova Split PDF tool, choose “every N pages” and pick a number that produces parts small enough to attach. The parts download together as a ZIP, and you send them in separate emails or as separate attachments. Before you split, try compressing the file, because that often solves the problem without breaking the document up.
Email services limit how big an attachment can be, and the limit is not the same everywhere. Your provider’s limit and the receiver’s limit can also differ. Check the limit shown by your email service, and aim comfortably below it.
Compress first, split second
A single file is nicer to receive than five. So the sensible order is to make the file smaller first and only split if it is still too big.
Open the file in Compress PDF, move the slider to choose a compression level, and compare the before and after size. The preview lets you check that the pages are still readable before you download.
How much you gain depends on what is inside the file:
- Scans and photo-heavy files usually shrink a lot, because the tool reduces image resolution and quality.
- Text-only files shrink very little. They are already compact, and their size comes from the number of pages.
- Mixed files fall in between.
If compression brings the file under the limit with acceptable quality, you are done. If you want a fuller walkthrough of the settings, read how to compress a PDF for free. If the file is still too large, or you cannot afford to lose image quality, move on to splitting.
How to split large PDF documents into parts
- Check the numbers. Note the file size and the page count. Dividing one by the other gives a rough size per page.
- Decide how many parts you need. If the file is about three times the allowed size, plan for four parts, not three, to leave a margin.
- Open Split PDF and add the document.
- Choose a mode. Use “every N pages” for equal parts, or page ranges such as 1-40, 41-85, 86-120 if you want the breaks at chapter boundaries.
- Split and download. The parts arrive in one ZIP file.
- Unpack the ZIP and check each part’s size. If one part is still too heavy, split that part again or compress it.
- Rename the parts so the order is obvious, then attach them.
The default maximum file size on PDFNova is 100 MB. Processing happens on your device, so a very large file works best on a computer or a recent phone with other apps closed.
Why equal page counts do not give equal file sizes
Pages are not equally heavy. A page of plain text takes very little space. A full-page photo or a colour scan takes far more. If the first half of your report is text and the second half is scanned appendices, splitting at the middle page gives one tiny part and one huge part.
When the first split comes out uneven, switch to page ranges. Give the image-heavy section fewer pages per part and the text section more. It takes one extra attempt, but the parts will fit.
Which approach should you choose?
| Approach | Advantage | Drawback | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compress only | Receiver gets one file | Images lose some sharpness | The file is scan or photo heavy and a little over the limit |
| Split only | Full original quality | Several attachments to manage | Quality must be kept, or the file is mostly text |
| Compress, then split | Fewest parts possible | Two steps | The file is far over the limit |
| Remove unneeded pages | Shorter, more focused document | Reader does not get everything | Only part of the file is relevant |
The last row is easy to forget. Often the file is large because it includes pages nobody asked for: blank scans, duplicate pages, old appendices. Removing them may be all you need. See how to delete pages from a PDF for free.
Make the parts easy for the receiver
Several attachments create a risk of confusion. A little care prevents the reply that says “I think one part is missing”.
- Name parts in order: for example annual-report-part-1-of-4, annual-report-part-2-of-4.
- Say how many parts there are in the email text, and list the page range in each.
- Number the emails in the subject line if you send parts separately, such as “Annual report (2 of 4)”.
- Break at natural points such as chapter starts, so each part makes sense alone.
- Send a short final message confirming that all parts were sent.
If the document needs a different page order before you cut it, fix that first. Our guide on how to rearrange pages in a PDF explains how. The receiver can join the parts again with Merge PDF if they want one file.
Troubleshooting
The email still bounces
The receiver’s mail system may have a lower limit than yours. Split into smaller parts, or ask them what size they can accept.
Attaching several parts to one email fails
Limits usually apply to the whole message, not to each attachment. Three parts in one email count together. Send one part per email.
Compression made the text blurry
Move the slider to a lighter level and check the preview again. Small printed text in scans is the first thing to suffer. For documents that must stay sharp, split without compressing.
The browser struggles with the file
Close other tabs and apps. If you are on a phone, try a computer. Splitting the file into two halves first and then working on each half can also help.
Frequently asked questions
How do I send a PDF that is too large for email?
Compress it first. If it is still too large, split it into parts and send each part in its own email with clear numbering.
How do I split a large PDF into smaller files for free?
Use the Split PDF tool with the every N pages option or with page ranges. PDFNova is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark.
Does splitting a PDF lower its quality?
No. Splitting copies pages into new files without changing them. Only compression affects image quality.
Is it safe to split a large confidential PDF online?
PDFNova processes files in your browser, so your documents are not uploaded to a server. The file stays on your device while it is split.
When an attachment refuses to send, open Split PDF, cut the document into sensible parts and get it delivered.
