To convert PNG to PDF, open the PDFNova Image to PDF tool, add your PNG files, choose A4, Letter or fit-to-image as the page size, and download the PDF. One PNG gives a one page PDF, and several PNGs become pages of the same document in the order you set.
PNG files are a little different from camera photos. They are mostly screenshots, logos, charts, diagrams and scanned line art, with sharp edges and sometimes a transparent background. The settings that suit a holiday photo are not always right for them, so this guide concentrates on getting PNG content onto a page cleanly.
What makes PNG different from JPG
| PNG | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Screenshots, logos, charts, diagrams, text graphics | Camera photos |
| How it stores detail | Lossless, edges and text stay exact | Lossy, tuned for smooth photo tones |
| Transparency | Supported | Not supported |
| File size for photos | Large | Smaller |
| File size for flat graphics | Often small | Can show fuzzy marks around text |
For the reader of your PDF, the practical point is that PNG text and lines are crisp. Your job is to keep them crisp by choosing a page layout that does not shrink the image more than needed.
How to convert PNG to PDF
- Open Image to PDF in a modern browser on your phone, tablet or computer.
- Add the PNG files. Select one or several. You can also add JPGs in the same batch.
- Arrange the order. Drag the thumbnails so the pages follow the sequence you want.
- Choose the page size. Fit-to-image keeps every pixel at its natural shape with no border. A4 or Letter puts the graphic on a standard document page.
- Set orientation and margins. Use landscape for wide charts and slides. Add a margin if the file will be printed.
- Create the PDF and download it. The file saves straight to your device.
PDFNova processes files in your browser, so your documents are not uploaded to a server. It is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark.
Best settings for each kind of PNG
Screenshots
Phone screenshots are tall and narrow, computer screenshots are wide. Fit-to-image avoids large white bands and keeps the text as large as possible when the PDF is read on a screen. For a series of captures, such as a conversation or an order history, our guide on turning screenshots into a single PDF covers ordering and cropping.
Charts, diagrams and slides
These are normally wider than they are tall. Choose A4 or Letter in landscape with a small margin if they belong in a report or will be printed. Choose fit-to-image if the PDF is only for viewing.
Logos and graphics with a transparent background
PDF pages are normally shown and printed on white. A logo with a transparent background will usually look fine if it is dark, but a white or very light logo can become invisible on a white page. Open the finished PDF and check. If the graphic depends on a colored background, place it on that background in an image editor first and save a new PNG before converting.
Scanned line art and signatures
A4 or Letter with a margin gives a natural document look. If you want to place a signature image onto an existing PDF, that is a different task. Use Sign PDF, which lets you upload a photo of your signature and position it on the page.
Why your PNG looks blurry or tiny in the PDF
These are the usual causes and how to solve them.
- Small source image. An icon or small web graphic has few pixels. Stretched across an A4 page it looks soft and blocky. Use fit-to-image, or find a larger version of the graphic.
- Wrong orientation. A wide screenshot on a portrait page takes up only a narrow strip. Switch to landscape.
- Large margins. Wide margins shrink the image area. Reduce them for screen reading.
- Very long screenshots. A scrolling capture of a whole web page is extremely tall. Forced onto one A4 page, the text becomes unreadable. Use fit-to-image, or cut the capture into sections first.
- Image saved from a chat. Messaging apps often reduce picture quality. Ask for the original file.
Managing file size
PNG screenshots of text and flat color are usually light. PNG files that contain photographs, gradients or game captures can be very large, because the format keeps every detail. A PDF made from many of those may exceed an upload limit.
If that happens, open the result in Compress PDF. The slider sets the compression level, and you can compare the before and after size with a preview. The tool works mainly by reducing image resolution and quality, so move in small steps and check that small text in screenshots is still sharp. Check the limit shown on the upload page to know how far you need to go.
Mixing PNGs with other files
Reports and applications are rarely made of images alone. You may have a typed PDF, two PNG charts and a photo. Convert the images to PDF first, then join everything with Merge PDF, dragging the files into the right order. The full process is described in how to combine PDFs and images into one file.
Going the other way is also possible. If you need a picture of a PDF page for a presentation or a social post, read how to convert PDF to JPG. The same tool can export pages as PNG as well.
Checklist before you send the PDF
- Every page opens and is the right way up.
- Small text is readable at normal zoom on a phone.
- Light or transparent graphics are visible on the white page.
- Pages are in the intended order.
- No private details appear in screenshots, such as notification banners, account numbers or other chats. If they do, crop the image and convert again, or black them out properly with Redact PDF.
- The file has a clear name and is under the size limit of the place you are sending it.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting PNG to PDF lose quality?
Placing a PNG on a PDF page keeps it clear for normal viewing and printing. Visible quality loss comes from stretching a small image over a large page or from strong compression afterwards.
How do I convert multiple PNG files into one PDF?
Add all the PNG files together, drag them into order and create the file. Each PNG becomes one page in a single PDF.
What happens to a transparent PNG background in a PDF?
The page behind the image is normally white, so transparent areas appear white when viewed or printed. Check light colored graphics, as they may be hard to see.
Can I convert PNG to PDF on a phone?
Yes. The tool runs in the browser on Android and iPhone. Choose the PNG files from your gallery or files, set the page and download.
For crisp results, match the page to the graphic: fit-to-image for screens, A4 or Letter for print. Open Image to PDF, add your PNG files and your document is ready in moments.
