To combine PDF and images into a single file, convert the pictures to PDF pages first and then merge those pages with your existing PDFs. On PDFNova that means two short steps: Image to PDF for the photos or screenshots, then Merge PDF to join everything in the order you choose.
It sounds like extra work, but the two-step route gives you control that a one-click mix does not. You decide the page size and margins of the picture pages, so a phone photo of a receipt sits neatly on an A4 page next to your typed documents.
Typical situations where files are mixed
- A job application with a PDF resume plus photos of certificates.
- An expense claim with a PDF invoice and pictures of paper receipts.
- A university or visa file where some papers were downloaded and others were photographed.
- A project report with exported charts as PNG files and text chapters as PDF.
- A class pack that joins a PDF worksheet with photos of the whiteboard.
In each case the receiver wants one file, in a sensible order, that opens on any device. A single PDF does exactly that.
Step 1: turn your pictures into PDF pages
- Open Image to PDF in your browser.
- Add your JPG or PNG files. Photos from the camera and screenshots both work.
- Reorder the pictures so they follow the sequence you want.
- Choose a page size: A4, Letter or fit-to-image. Pick the size your other PDFs use, which is A4 in most countries.
- Set portrait or landscape, and choose a margin. A small margin looks tidy and keeps content away from the edge when printing.
- Create the PDF and download it to your device.
If the pictures belong in different places in the final document, for example one certificate after the resume and receipts at the end, make a separate small PDF for each group. That makes ordering easier in the next step.
Step 2: combine PDF and images into one document
- Open Merge PDF.
- Add your original PDFs and the new PDFs you made from pictures.
- Drag the files into the right order. If you numbered the file names, the A to Z sort arranges them for you.
- Merge them into one PDF and download the result.
- Open the finished file and scroll through every page before sending it.
If you have never joined files before, our basic guide on how to merge PDF files for free without uploading them explains the merge screen in more detail.
Choosing the right page settings for pictures
| Type of picture | Page size | Orientation | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo of a full paper document | A4 or Letter | Portrait | Small |
| Wide screenshot from a computer | A4 or Letter | Landscape | Small |
| Tall phone screenshot | Fit-to-image | Portrait | None |
| Small receipt or ticket | A4 or Letter | Portrait | Larger, so it does not stretch across the page |
| Chart or diagram for a report | Same as the report | Match the chart shape | Same as the report if possible |
Fit-to-image makes each page exactly the size of the picture. It is good for on-screen reading, but it produces pages of mixed sizes. If the file will be printed, stay with A4 or Letter.
Better source pictures, better PDF
The final document can only be as clear as the photos you start with. A few habits help a lot.
- Photograph paper in even light, straight from above, with the whole sheet in frame.
- Crop away the table and background before converting.
- Rotate pictures so they are upright in your gallery first.
- Do not send photos through chat apps before converting, since many apps shrink pictures and blur small text.
For paper documents, a scanner tool is often better than a plain photo. The Camera Scanner detects the page edges, corrects the perspective and saves several pages straight into one PDF, which you can then merge with your other files.
Fixing problems after the merge
A page is in the wrong place or sideways
Open the merged file in Organize Pages. You can drag pages into a new order, rotate them and delete any you added by mistake, then save a corrected copy.
The file is too big to send
Photos make PDFs heavy. Use a compression tool on the finished file and check that text in the pictures is still readable. Image-heavy files usually shrink well. For the allowed size, check the limit shown on the upload page of the service you are using.
Picture pages look tiny or stretched
This comes from the page size setting. Remake the picture PDF with a different size or margin and merge again. It takes a minute and the result looks far more professional.
My image is not JPG or PNG
The converter accepts JPG and PNG. If your phone saves photos in another format, export or share the picture as JPG from your gallery, or take a screenshot of it as a last resort.
Tips for specific kinds of documents
Financial papers. When a bundle includes statements, be careful with account numbers and balances that the receiver does not need. Our guide on how to combine bank statements into one PDF safely covers ordering by date and blacking out details correctly.
Teaching material. Mixing worksheets, scanned pages and photos is everyday work in a classroom. See our PDF tips for teachers for ideas on building packs, adding page numbers and preparing files for printing.
Applications. Follow the order given in the instructions. If none is given, a common order is: form, identity document, qualifications, then supporting papers.
Before you send: a short checklist
- Every page is upright and readable.
- Picture pages match the size of the other pages, if the file will be printed.
- The order follows the receiver’s instructions.
- The file size is within the stated limit.
- The file name is clear, for example your name and the purpose.
Frequently asked questions
Can I merge a JPG and a PDF into one file directly?
Convert the JPG to PDF first, then merge the two PDFs. The conversion takes only a few seconds and lets you set the page size and margins for the picture.
How do I combine PDF and images on my phone?
Both tools work in a mobile browser. Convert the photos from your gallery to a PDF, download it, then open the merge tool, add all the files and combine them.
Will my photos lose quality inside the PDF?
The pictures are placed on the page as they are. Quality only drops if you compress the finished PDF, and you can preview the result before saving.
Are my files uploaded during this process?
No. PDFNova processes files in your browser, so your documents are not uploaded to a server. The results download directly to your device.
Start with the pictures. Open Image to PDF, make your picture pages, then merge them with your PDFs for one clean file. It is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark.
