How to Add an Image or Logo to a PDF

To add image to PDF pages, open the document in an editor, choose the insert image option, pick the picture and drag it into position. PDFNova’s PDF Editor handles a logo, photo or stamp on a single page, and the Add Watermark tool repeats an image across the whole document. Both run in your browser, so the file is not uploaded.

Which of the two you need depends on one question: should the picture appear once, or on every page? The sections below cover both routes, along with advice on preparing the image so it looks sharp and keeps the file small.

One page or every page? Pick the right tool

What you want Tool Why
A logo in the header of a one-page letter PDF Editor Free placement and resizing on that page
A photo on an application form PDF Editor You can fit it exactly into the photo box
A product picture next to a paragraph PDF Editor Place it anywhere on the page
A faint logo behind the content of all pages Add Watermark Applies to the document with opacity control
A “Draft” or company stamp image across a report Add Watermark Same position and angle throughout
A full-page photo as a new page Image to PDF, then Merge PDF The picture becomes its own page

How to add an image to a PDF page

  1. Open the PDF Editor on your phone or computer.
  2. Choose the PDF from your device and enter its password if it has one.
  3. Go to the page where the picture belongs.
  4. Select the insert image tool and pick the picture file from your device.
  5. Drag the image to the right spot on the page.
  6. Resize it until it fits the space. Check that it does not cover any text you need.
  7. Repeat for other images or other pages.
  8. Download the edited PDF and open it to check the result.

The picture is placed on top of the existing page. The text around it does not move to make room, because a PDF has a fixed layout. Our article what is a PDF and why is it used everywhere explains this behaviour. In practice it means you should place images in empty areas such as margins, headers, photo boxes or the white space at the end of a section.

How to put a logo on every page

  1. Open Add Watermark.
  2. Select your PDF.
  3. Choose the image watermark option and pick your logo file.
  4. Set the position, for example a corner for a small brand mark or the centre for a background logo.
  5. Adjust the opacity. A low value keeps the content readable when the logo sits behind text.
  6. Set the angle if you want the mark tilted.
  7. Check the live preview, then download the watermarked PDF.

A corner logo at higher opacity works as letterhead branding. A large, faint, centred logo works as a traditional watermark that marks ownership without hiding the text.

Preparing the image first

Choose the right file type

Use PNG for logos, stamps and anything with sharp edges or a transparent background. Use JPG for photographs. A logo saved as JPG has a solid background, usually white, which looks like a white box if the page is not white.

Crop tightly

Remove empty space around the picture before inserting it. Extra blank edges make the image harder to position and can cover nearby text even though they look empty.

Mind the resolution

A tiny image stretched large looks blurry. A huge photo placed small wastes space and makes the PDF heavy. As a simple rule, use a picture that is somewhat larger than the size it will have on the page, not many times larger.

Keep the proportions

Resize from a corner so the width and height change together. A stretched or squashed logo is one of the most noticeable mistakes in business documents.

Common uses and tips

  • Letterhead logo. Place it at the top of the first page, aligned with the left or right text margin. Keep it modest in size.
  • Photo on a form. Crop the photo to the shape of the box first, then resize it to sit just inside the border. Check the form’s instructions for photo requirements.
  • Company stamp. A PNG with a transparent background looks most natural over text. Only use stamps you are authorised to use.
  • Screenshot or diagram. Place it in the white space after the related paragraph and add a short caption with the text tool.

Signature images: use the signing tool

You can insert a picture of your signature with the editor, but a dedicated tool makes it easier. Sign PDF lets you draw, type or upload a photo of your signature, place and resize it, and add an optional date. Our guide on how to sign a PDF online for free walks through it, and how to create an electronic signature by drawing, typing or photo helps you make a clean signature image in the first place.

This produces a simple electronic signature, not a certificate-based digital signature. Whether it is accepted depends on the country and the organisation, so check their requirements. This is general information, not legal advice.

Troubleshooting

The image has a white box around it

The file has no transparency. Use a PNG version of the logo with a transparent background, or place the image only on white areas of the page.

The PDF became very large

The inserted picture was probably a full-size camera photo. Reduce the image before inserting it, or shrink the finished file with Compress PDF, which mainly works by lowering image resolution and quality. Check the preview so the logo still looks sharp.

The image looks blurry

The source picture is too small for the size you gave it. Use a larger original or make the image smaller on the page.

The image covers text

Move it to free space, make it smaller, or use the watermark tool with low opacity so the text stays readable through it.

My picture is not accepted

Convert it to JPG or PNG first. Most phone galleries can export or share a photo in one of these formats.

Frequently asked questions

How do I insert a picture into a PDF for free?

Open the PDF in a browser-based editor, choose insert image, select the picture, place and resize it, then download the file. PDFNova is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark of its own.

Can I add an image to a PDF on my phone?

Yes. The editor works in mobile browsers, and you can pick a picture straight from your gallery. Zoom in for precise placement.

How do I add a logo to all pages of a PDF?

Use an image watermark. Choose your logo, set its position, opacity and angle, check the preview and download. The logo is applied across the document.

Does adding an image reduce the quality of the PDF?

No. The existing pages stay as they are. Only the inserted image adds to the file, so a well-sized picture keeps the document both sharp and small.

Whether it is a logo, a photo or a stamp, placing a picture takes a minute. Open the PDF Editor, insert your image, position it and download the finished PDF.
