If a PDF won’t open, the cause is usually one of five things: the download did not finish, the file is not really a PDF, it is password protected, your viewer app is outdated or broken, or the file itself is damaged. Work through the checks below in order and most files open within a few minutes.
This guide is written as a troubleshooting checklist, starting with the quickest fixes. Where a PDFNova tool helps, such as Unlock PDF for files that keep asking for a password you know, it is explained along the way.
Quick checks before anything else
- Try another viewer. Open the file in your web browser instead of an app, or the other way round. Modern browsers on phones and computers can display most PDFs.
- Restart the app or device. A frozen viewer often just needs closing.
- Look at the file size. A PDF of 0 KB or a few bytes is empty, so no app will open it. You need a fresh copy.
- Check the file name ending. It should end in .pdf, not .pdf.crdownload, .tmp, .html or .zip.
If one of these solves it, you are done. If not, find your symptom in the table below.
Why a PDF won’t open: causes and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “File is damaged” or “could not be opened” | Incomplete download or broken transfer | Download again on a stable connection, or ask the sender to resend |
| Asks for a password | The PDF is encrypted with an open password | Enter the password you were given; see the password section below |
| Opens as strange text or code | Not actually a PDF, or opened in the wrong app | Check the real file type; open it with a PDF viewer or browser |
| Blank white pages | Viewer cannot render the content, or pages are slow to load | Wait, then try a different viewer or browser |
| App crashes on a big file | Very large or image-heavy PDF on a low-memory phone | Open on a computer, or ask for a smaller version |
| Email attachment will not open | Preview limits in the mail app, or blocked attachment | Save the attachment to your device first, then open it |
The download did not finish
This is the most common reason. A weak mobile connection can cut a download short and leave a file that looks normal but is missing its end. A PDF stores important information at the end of the file, so even a small gap stops it opening.
Delete the broken copy and download again, ideally on Wi-Fi. If it came through a messaging app, ask the sender to send it again as a document rather than forwarding a forwarded copy. If it was uploaded to a portal and now fails, re-download your own original from your device, not from the portal.
The file is not really a PDF
Sometimes a website gives you an HTML page, an image or a ZIP that has been named “.pdf”. Your PDF viewer then refuses it. Try opening it in a browser: if you see a web page or a picture, that is what it really is.
It helps to understand what makes a real PDF different from other files. Our guide what is a PDF and why is it used everywhere explains the format in plain words.
The PDF asks for a password
Banks, schools and employers often protect PDFs with an open password. The password is usually sent separately or follows a pattern explained in the email, such as part of your date of birth or account number. Read the message carefully and type it exactly, watching for capital letters.
If you know the password but are tired of typing it every time, or another app cannot handle protected files, you can save an unlocked copy. PDFNova processes files in your browser, so your documents are not uploaded to a server.
- Open the Unlock PDF tool and select the protected file.
- Type the password you already know when asked.
- Save the unlocked copy to your device.
- Open the new copy in any viewer. It no longer needs the password.
Unlock PDF cannot crack unknown passwords. If you do not know the password, the only correct route is to ask the person or organisation that sent the file.
Your viewer is the problem
Outdated PDF apps can struggle with newer files, forms or unusual fonts. Update the app, or simply use your browser, which handles most everyday PDFs. On a phone, check that you have some free storage, since apps can fail silently when the device is full.
If you only need to view or share the content and nothing else works, you can turn pages into pictures. PDF to JPG exports pages as JPG or PNG at 72, 150 or 300 DPI, either one page or all pages in a ZIP. Images open on almost any phone, which is handy for someone who cannot open the PDF at all.
The PDF opens but something else is wrong
Sometimes the file opens but you cannot select or copy text. That is a different problem, usually caused by a scanned page or copy restrictions. See how to copy text from a PDF that will not let you for the fixes. And if the problem is that the file is too heavy to upload or send, Compress PDF can reduce it, mainly by lowering image quality.
Prevent the problem next time
- Keep your original files in a known folder, not only inside chat apps.
- Download important PDFs on a stable connection and open them once to check.
- Test your own files before submitting them to a portal. Our guide on preparing documents for online university admission forms includes a pre-upload checklist.
- Store passwords for protected statements somewhere safe so you are not locked out later.
Frequently asked questions
Why won’t a PDF open on my Android phone?
Usually the download was incomplete, the phone has no PDF viewer set, or storage is full. Try opening it in your browser, free some space, and download it again on Wi-Fi.
Why does a PDF open on my computer but not on my phone?
Phones have less memory and some apps support fewer PDF features. Very large or complex files can fail. Try a different app or browser, or convert the pages to images.
Can I open a PDF if I forgot the password?
No legitimate tool can open it without the password. Ask the sender for the password or for a new copy.
How do I fix a PDF that says it is damaged?
First get a fresh copy, because most “damaged” files are incomplete downloads. If the original is truly corrupted, the sender needs to create the PDF again from their source file.
Most PDFs that refuse to open just need a fresh download or the right password. When you know the password and want a copy that opens anywhere, use PDFNova Unlock PDF, free and without sign-up.
