Hindi OCR Online: Convert Hindi Images and PDFs to Text

Hindi OCR online lets you turn a photo or scanned PDF of Hindi text into Devanagari text you can copy, edit and search, without retyping it. On PDFNova, open the free OCR PDF tool, select Hindi, add your file and choose whether you want plain text or a searchable PDF.

Typing Hindi by hand is slow, especially if you are not used to a Devanagari keyboard. OCR does most of the work for you. Below you will find the exact steps, what kind of documents work well, and how to fix the most common recognition errors.

Where Hindi OCR saves the most time

  • Old printed documents: property papers, letters and notices that exist only on paper.
  • Study material: pages from Hindi textbooks or guides you want to quote or make notes from.
  • Office work: circulars, application forms and printed replies that need to be retyped into a new document.
  • Screenshots: Hindi text in an image that you cannot select or copy.
  • Archives: scanned files you want to search later by name or keyword.

OCR is designed for printed text. Neat handwriting may give partial results, but expect to correct a lot of it.

Steps to run Hindi OCR online in your browser

PDFNova processes files in your browser, so your documents are not uploaded to a server. That helps when the page contains names, addresses or ID numbers.

  1. Open OCR PDF. Go to the OCR PDF tool on your phone, tablet or computer.
  2. Add the scan. Choose a scanned PDF or an image such as a JPG or PNG photo of the page.
  3. Select Hindi. Pick Hindi from the language list. The Hindi language data downloads the first time you use it, which can take a little while on mobile data.
  4. Start recognition. The tool reads the text on your own device. Multi-page files take longer than a single image.
  5. Choose an output. Copy the text, download a .txt file, or save a searchable PDF.
  6. Check the result. Read through the output alongside the original and correct any mistakes.

Scanned image, scanned PDF or digital PDF?

Before you start, it helps to know what kind of file you have, because not every Hindi PDF needs OCR.

Your file How to tell What to use
Photo or screenshot It is a JPG or PNG image OCR PDF with Hindi selected
Scanned PDF You cannot highlight individual words OCR PDF with Hindi selected
Digital PDF You can select and highlight words PDF to Text, which extracts the existing text directly

For digital files, the PDF to Text tool is usually quicker because the text is already inside the file. Our guide on scanned PDF vs digital PDF and how to tell the difference explains this in more detail.

Why Hindi text is tricky for OCR

Devanagari has features that make recognition harder than with English letters:

  • The headline (shirorekha): the line across the top joins letters into a single shape, so the software must work out where one letter ends.
  • Vowel signs (matras): small marks above, below or beside letters are easy to lose in a blurry or faint scan.
  • Conjunct letters: combined consonants have many shapes, and older or unusual fonts may show them differently.
  • Dots and small marks: the nukta and anusvara are tiny and can disappear in low-quality photos.

The clearer these small details are in your image, the better the result.

Checklist for accurate Hindi OCR

  • Capture the page straight on, not at an angle. The Camera Scanner corrects perspective and detects the page edges for you.
  • Use even light with no shadow across the text.
  • Try grayscale or black and white filters for printed text on plain paper.
  • Make the text fill as much of the frame as possible.
  • Avoid heavily compressed images, such as photos forwarded many times in chat apps.
  • Crop out photos, logos and stamps if you only need the body text.
  • Confirm that Hindi is selected, not English.

If you are scanning official papers, our guides on how to scan an ID card to PDF with front and back on one page and how to scan a passport to PDF for online applications show how to get a clean copy. Rules for submitting documents differ by organisation, so always follow the instructions of the office you are applying to.

Fixing common errors

Matras are missing or misplaced

This usually means the image is too small or blurry. Rescan closer to the page and run OCR again.

English letters appear in the output

Check the language setting. If English was selected, the software tries to read Devanagari as Latin letters.

Copied text looks broken in another app

Paste into an app with a font that supports Devanagari. Some older programs show boxes or broken conjuncts because the font is missing, not because the OCR failed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a Hindi PDF to text for free?

Yes. Use OCR PDF for scanned Hindi PDFs, or PDF to Text for digital PDFs that already contain selectable text. Both are free with no sign-up.

Can I do Hindi OCR on my mobile phone?

Yes. The tool works in modern mobile browsers. Add a photo or PDF from your phone, choose Hindi and copy or download the result.

Can I get a searchable Hindi PDF?

Yes. Choose the searchable PDF output. The page looks the same as the scan, but you can search and select the recognised words.

Does Hindi OCR work offline?

Recognition happens on your device, but the Hindi language data must download the first time, so you need a connection for that first use.
