How to Remove Blank Pages From a PDF

To remove blank pages from PDF files, open the document in PDFNova Delete Pages, click each empty page in the preview and download the rest as a new PDF. You pick the pages yourself, which takes a minute and makes sure nothing with real content is removed by mistake.

Blank pages make a document look careless, waste paper when printed and add size for no reason. The good news is that they usually follow a pattern, so once you see where they come from, they are quick to clear out.

Where blank pages come from

Cause Typical pattern How to deal with it
Single-sided paper scanned in double-sided mode Every second page is empty Delete all even positions, and change the scanner setting next time
Separator or cover sheets in the stack One empty page between documents Click and delete each one
Page breaks in a Word document One empty page near the end or between chapters Fix in the source file, or delete in the PDF
Spreadsheet print area too wide or too long Empty or nearly empty pages after each sheet Adjust the print area, or delete in the PDF
Chapters set to start on a right-hand page Empty left-hand pages in books and reports Keep them if printing double-sided, delete for screen reading

The last row is a reminder that not every empty page is a mistake. In a document meant for double-sided printing, intentional blanks keep chapters starting on the correct side. Think about how the file will be used before you remove them.

How to remove blank pages from PDF, step by step

  1. Open Delete Pages in your browser and add the PDF.
  2. Look through the page previews. Empty pages stand out as plain white or light grey rectangles.
  3. Click or tap every blank page to mark it for removal.
  4. Use a range for long runs. If a block of pages is empty, type the range instead of clicking each one.
  5. Check the marked pages once more. A page with a faint stamp, a signature or one line of text can look empty at thumbnail size.
  6. Download the new PDF. It contains everything except the pages you removed.
  7. Open the result and scroll through to confirm that the content flows correctly.

Your original file is not altered, so there is no risk in trying.

Pages that look blank but are not

Thumbnails are small. Before you delete, watch for pages that only seem empty:

  • A page with a small page number, a footer or a single line such as “This page is intentionally left blank”.
  • The back of a form with a light stamp, a barcode or handwritten initials.
  • A page with pale pencil notes or a faded receipt.
  • A signature page where the only content is one signature near the bottom.

If you are unsure, open the original document in a viewer and look at that page at full size. Deleting a page that carried a stamp or signature can make an official document incomplete.

When the document needs more than deleting

Scans with blank pages often have other faults: pages out of order, some turned sideways. In that case use Organize Pages instead. Its thumbnail view lets you delete, reorder and rotate in one session, then save a single corrected file.

If rotation is your main issue, our guide on how to rotate a PDF and save it permanently explains the options. If the whole scan came out the wrong way up, see how to fix an upside-down or sideways scanned PDF.

Sometimes the opposite is needed. A separator between sections, or an empty back page so that a double-sided print lines up, can be useful. That is covered in how to insert a blank page into a PDF.

Stop blank pages before they appear

When scanning

Check the single-sided or double-sided setting on the scanner before you start. Remove separator sheets from the stack. If you scan with a phone, you choose every page yourself, so blanks never enter the file. The Camera Scanner captures pages one by one and puts them into a single PDF.

When exporting from Word

An empty page at the end usually comes from extra paragraph marks or a page break after the last line. Turn on the display of formatting marks, delete the extra ones, then export to PDF again.

When exporting from Excel

Stray content far to the right or far down a sheet, even one space in a cell, makes the program print extra pages. Set a print area that covers only your table and check the print preview before saving as PDF.

Do blank pages affect file size?

It depends on what kind of blank they are. A truly empty page created by a word processor adds almost nothing. A scanned blank page is different. It is a picture of white paper, complete with texture and shadows, and it can be as heavy as a page full of text.

So removing blanks from a scan can cut the size noticeably. If the file is still too large afterwards, Compress PDF reduces the image data in the remaining pages.

Quick checklist

  • Decide whether the blanks are mistakes or intentional.
  • Zoom in on any page that is nearly, but not completely, empty.
  • Mark the blanks and download the new file.
  • Check that the page count is what you expect.
  • Save the cleaned file under a new name and keep the original until you are sure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I delete a blank page at the end of a PDF?

Open the file in a page-deleting tool, click the last page and download the rest. If the PDF came from Word, you can also remove the extra break in the source document and export again.

Can I remove all blank pages from a scanned PDF at once?

You can mark all of them in one session and remove them together. Go through the previews, click each empty page, then download. A manual check protects pages that only look empty.

Will removing blank pages change my page numbers?

Numbers printed on the pages stay as they are. The position of each page in the file shifts up to fill the gaps.

Is my document uploaded when I remove pages?

No. PDFNova processes files in your browser, so your documents are not uploaded to a server.

To tidy up your document, open Delete Pages, click the empty pages and download a clean copy.
