To fix upside down PDF scans, open the file in PDFNova Rotate PDF, turn the affected pages by two 90 degree steps (or one step if they are sideways) and download the corrected file. The new orientation is saved inside the PDF, so it opens the right way up for you and for anyone you send it to.
Scans come out upside down or sideways all the time. The paper went into the feeder the wrong way, the phone was held at an angle, or a double-sided job flipped every second sheet. None of it means you have to scan again.
First, work out what kind of problem you have
Open the scan and scroll through it. The pattern tells you the fastest fix.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Every page is upside down | Stack loaded head-first the wrong way | Rotate all pages by two steps |
| Every page is sideways | Paper fed long edge first, or phone held in landscape | Rotate all pages by one step in the right direction |
| Every second page is upside down | Double-sided scan with the wrong flip setting | Rotate only the even or odd pages by two steps |
| A few random pages are wrong | Some sheets were turned in the stack | Rotate those pages individually |
| Pages are tilted by a few degrees | Paper skewed in the feeder, or photo taken at an angle | Rescan, rotation in quarter turns will not straighten it |
| Pages are upside down and in reverse order | Stack loaded face up and back to front | Rotate, then reorder |
How to fix upside down PDF pages, step by step
- Open Rotate PDF in the browser on your phone or computer.
- Add the scanned file. If it has a password, enter it when asked.
- If all pages are wrong, use the option to rotate all pages. Press twice for upside down pages. Press once for sideways pages, and if they end up upside down, press twice more.
- If only some pages are wrong, rotate those pages one at a time until each looks correct.
- Scroll through the previews to make sure every page is upright, including the last ones.
- Save and download the corrected PDF.
- Close it and open it again to confirm that the rotation has stayed.
Rotation in 90 degree steps does not blur or re-compress the scan. The pages are exactly as sharp as before, just facing the right way.
Why turning the page in your viewer is not enough
The rotate button in many PDF viewers changes only what you see. The file stays the same. That is why a scan you “fixed” yesterday is upside down again today, and why your colleague complains even though it looks fine on your screen.
A proper fix rewrites the page orientation in the file. After you save with Rotate PDF, there is nothing for the viewer to remember, because the page itself is now upright.
When the scan has several problems
A badly loaded stack rarely has just one fault. If your pages are also out of order, or blank backs were scanned, use Organize Pages. It shows every page as a thumbnail and lets you rotate, drag pages into order, delete the extras and save once.
A good sequence for cleaning a messy scan:
- Delete blank and unwanted pages, so there is less to handle.
- Rotate everything that is upside down or sideways.
- Drag the pages into the correct order.
- Save, then check the result from first page to last.
The same thumbnail view handles a couple of less common needs. If a double-sided print needs an empty back page to line up, see how to insert a blank page into a PDF. If one sheet has to appear in two places, see how to duplicate a page in a PDF.
And if your scan is spread across several files, with some the right way up and some not, fix each file’s rotation first and then join them. Our guide on how to merge scanned documents into one PDF covers the joining step.
Tilted pages need a new scan
A page that leans by a few degrees is not a rotation problem. Quarter-turn rotation cannot straighten it. If the tilt is small and the text is readable, you may decide to leave it. If it looks untidy, capture that page again.
For a phone, the Camera Scanner is the simple way. It detects the edges of the paper automatically, lets you adjust the corners by hand, and corrects the perspective so the page comes out flat and square.
Rotate before you run OCR
If you plan to make the scan searchable or copy text from it, fix the orientation first. Text recognition expects upright lines. Upside down or sideways pages can give poor results or nonsense characters.
Once the pages are upright, OCR PDF can recognise the text and give you a searchable PDF or plain text. Accuracy still depends on scan quality, so a clean, straight, well-lit page gives the best outcome.
How to avoid upside-down scans next time
- Check the feeder icon. Most document feeders have a small diagram showing which way the top of the page should point and whether it goes face up or face down.
- Scan one test page first before feeding a thick stack.
- Square the stack. Tap the pages on a table so the edges are even, which reduces skew.
- Look at the duplex setting. For double-sided originals, the choice between flipping on the long edge and the short edge decides whether back sides come out upright.
- Hold your phone the same way as the page. Portrait page, portrait phone. Keep the phone parallel to the paper.
- Turn off the wrong sheets before scanning. Flip through the stack and make sure all pages face the same way.
Frequently asked questions
How do I flip a scanned PDF that is upside down?
Open it in a rotation tool, rotate the pages by 180 degrees, which is two 90 degree steps, and save. The saved file stays upright everywhere.
Why does my PDF go back to upside down after I rotate it?
You rotated only the view. Many viewers do not write the change into the file. Use a tool that saves the rotation permanently and send that saved copy.
Can I fix only the pages that are sideways?
Yes. Rotate individual pages and leave the correct ones alone, then download the file.
Is it safe to fix a scanned ID or certificate online?
PDFNova processes files in your browser, so your documents are not uploaded to a server. The scan stays on your device while you correct it.
No need to scan the whole stack again. Open Rotate PDF, turn the pages upright and save the corrected file.
