You can draw on PDF pages directly in your browser. Open the file in the PDFNova PDF Editor, choose the freehand drawing tool, sketch with your finger, mouse or stylus, and download the result. Your marks are saved into a new copy of the document, and the file is processed on your device instead of being uploaded.
Drawing is the fastest way to point at something. A circle around a wrong figure or an arrow to a missing signature says more than a paragraph of explanation. Here is how to do it well on any device.
Freehand or shapes: pick the right kind of mark
The editor offers two ways to put lines on a page. Freehand drawing follows your hand exactly. Shapes give you clean, regular outlines. Each suits different jobs.
| What you want to do | Better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Circle a word or number quickly | Freehand | One fast stroke, natural look |
| Frame a paragraph, table or photo | Shape | Straight edges look tidy and professional |
| Sketch a diagram or graph | Freehand | You control every curve |
| Tick answers or mark crosses while grading | Freehand | Feels like a pen on paper |
| Mark an area on a floor plan or design | Shape | Easy to place and resize accurately |
| Write a short handwritten word | Freehand | Keeps the personal, handwritten feel |
If you need longer comments, typing is clearer than handwriting on a small screen. The guide on how to add notes and comments to a PDF shows how to combine sticky notes and typed text with your drawings.
How to draw on PDF pages step by step
- Open the PDF Editor in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
- Choose the PDF you want to mark up. If it has a password, enter it when asked.
- Move to the page you need and zoom in on the area where you will draw.
- Select the freehand draw tool from the toolbar.
- Draw on the page. Press and drag with a mouse, or use a finger or stylus on a touch screen.
- For neat boxes and outlines, switch to the shapes tool and place the shape over the area.
- Look over each page you marked, then save and download the new PDF.
The download is a separate file. Your original stays as it was, which is useful if you later want a clean copy.
Tips for each device
Phone
Turn the phone sideways so the page is wider, and zoom in before you draw. Small strokes made at normal zoom look shaky. After zooming, draw with slow, confident movements. A cheap rubber-tipped stylus gives more control than a fingertip.
Tablet with a stylus
This is the most natural setup and the closest to pen and paper. It is the best choice for solving maths problems, sketching diagrams and marking student work. Rest your hand lightly and check that stray touches have not left marks on the page.
Laptop or desktop
A mouse is fine for circles, arrows and underlines. A trackpad is harder for long strokes, so use shapes for anything that must look straight. For handwriting on a computer, a drawing tablet helps, but it is not required for simple markup.
What people use PDF drawing for
- Students: solving past paper questions on the page, labelling diagrams, linking ideas with arrows.
- Teachers: ticking, crossing and circling mistakes on submitted work. See our PDF tips for teachers on worksheets, notes and grading for a full marking workflow.
- Office teams: pointing out changes on a draft report or a design proof.
- Freelancers and clients: marking corrections on a layout, logo or brochure before final approval.
- Home and property: marking a spot on a map, plan or inspection photo.
Things drawing should not be used for
Hiding private information
Scribbling over an ID number or address is not safe. A drawn mark is not a proper way to remove sensitive text from a document. Use Redact PDF, which blacks out the area and flattens the page so the hidden text is actually removed. Apply the redaction, then open the file and check it again before sharing.
Signing documents
You can scrawl a signature with the drawing tool, but Sign PDF does the job better. It lets you draw, type or upload your signature, then place and resize it precisely, with an optional date.
Rewriting the document
Drawing adds marks on top of a page. It does not change the original wording. For changing text, adding images or retyping a line, read how to edit a PDF for free in your browser.
Troubleshooting
The page scrolls when I try to draw
Make sure the draw tool is selected before you touch the page. On a phone, start your stroke on the page itself, not on the edge of the screen where the browser may read it as a swipe.
My lines look shaky
Zoom in more and draw larger. A stroke that is drawn big and viewed at normal size looks much smoother. For straight edges, use shapes.
My drawing is missing when I open the file
Check that you opened the downloaded copy and not the original. If you opened the right file in an old viewer app, try a different PDF reader or your browser.
The file is slow to open
Very large or image-heavy PDFs take longer on a phone. Close other tabs, or work on only the pages you need. The default maximum file size is 100 MB.
Before you send a marked-up PDF
- Every mark is on the correct page and points at the correct item.
- No accidental strokes were left by a resting palm or finger.
- Handwritten words are readable at normal zoom.
- Nothing private is hidden only by a scribble.
- The file name shows that this is the reviewed or marked version.
Frequently asked questions

Yes. The PDFNova editor runs in a modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. You open the page, load your file and start drawing.
How do I draw on a PDF with my finger?
Open the editor on a touch screen, select the freehand draw tool and drag your finger across the page. Zoom in first for better control.
