The easiest way to scan book to PDF is to use your phone as the scanner. Lay the book open, hold one page flat, capture it with a browser camera scanner that crops and straightens the page, then repeat and save all pages as one file. The PDFNova Camera Scanner handles the cropping, perspective correction and PDF creation, and nothing is uploaded.
Books are harder to scan than loose sheets because the pages curve towards the spine and refuse to stay flat. With a sensible setup you can still get clean, readable pages from a textbook chapter, a library reference or an old family book. Here is the setup, the capture routine and the fixes for the usual problems.
Set up the book before you capture
Spend two minutes on the setup and every page after it goes faster.
- Use a table next to a window. Soft daylight from the side gives even light. Switch off a ceiling lamp directly overhead if it makes glossy pages shine.
- Put a dark cloth or folder under the book. It helps the scanner separate the page edge from the background.
- Scan one page at a time. A two-page spread always curves in the middle. One page per capture gives larger, sharper text.
- Flatten the page you are scanning. Press gently near the spine with your free hand, keeping fingers on the margin. For a thick book, raise the lighter side with another book so both halves sit at the same height.
- Be gentle with old or tightly bound books. Do not force the spine flat. A slightly curved scan is better than a broken binding.
How to scan a book to PDF, page by page
- Open the Camera Scanner in your phone browser and allow camera access when asked.
- Hold the phone directly above the first page, parallel to it, with the full page inside the frame.
- Let automatic edge detection find the page. In a book it may grab both pages or stop at the gutter, so check the outline.
- Capture, then drag the corner points so they sit on the four corners of the single page you want. Perspective correction straightens it.
- Pick a filter. Black and white suits plain printed text. Use grayscale for older, yellowed paper and color for pages with photos, maps or colored diagrams.
- Turn the page and add the next capture. Keep the same position and distance so all pages come out at a similar size.
- When the section is finished, save. Every page goes into one PDF that downloads to your phone.
A helpful rhythm is to scan all right-hand pages first without moving the book, then turn the book around and scan all left-hand pages, and fix the order afterwards. If that sounds confusing, simply go in reading order. It is slower but there is nothing to rearrange.
Phone scanning compared with other ways to copy a book
| Method | Good for | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|
| Phone camera scanner in the browser | A chapter or a few dozen pages, anywhere | Needs steady hands and good light |
| Flatbed scanner | Very sharp single pages | Slow, book must be pressed face down, not portable |
| Photocopier with scan function | Large batches in an office or library | Depends on access, files may be very large |
| Plain phone photos | One quick page for yourself | No cropping, skewed pages, separate image files |
Fixing curved pages, shadows and glare
Text bends near the spine
Curved lines come from the page lifting at the gutter. Press the page flatter, or move the corner points slightly inward so the worst of the curve is cropped out, as long as no text is lost. Holding the phone a little higher also reduces the visible curve.
A dark band runs down the inner edge
That is the shadow of the opposite page. Turn the book so the light falls into the gutter, not across it. The black and white filter often removes a light shadow, but a heavy one will turn into a black strip that hides words.
Glossy paper reflects the light
Tilt the book a few degrees or move away from the lamp until the bright spot leaves the text. Never use the phone flash on glossy pages.
Fingers appear in the scan
Keep your fingers on the outer margin and set the corner points just inside them. A clear ruler laid along the edge also holds a page down without covering much.
Tidy the pages after scanning
Open the finished file and check it from start to end. If pages are out of order, sideways or doubled, load the PDF in Organize Pages, drag the thumbnails into sequence, rotate or delete where needed and save a new copy.
Many scanned pages in color or grayscale make a large file. If you need to share a chapter with classmates, try Compress PDF. Because scans are images, they normally shrink a lot. Use the preview to make sure footnotes and small print stay readable before you download.
Make the scanned book searchable
A scanned page is a picture of text, so you cannot search or copy from it yet. Run the file through OCR PDF, choose the language of the book, and download a searchable PDF. Our explainer on what OCR is and how it works covers the idea, and the full walkthrough is in how to make a scanned PDF searchable.
Recognition is best on flat, sharp, evenly lit pages of printed text. Curved lines, shadows in the gutter and small footnotes reduce accuracy, which is one more reason to get the capture right. Printed English is recognised more reliably than Urdu Nastaliq, so check the output for Urdu books carefully.
A note on copyright
Scanning pages for your own study or to preserve a book you own is treated differently from sharing copies of a published book. Copyright rules vary by country and by institution, and this is general information, not legal advice. When in doubt, scan only what you need for personal use and ask your library or teacher about their policy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I scan a book without cutting or damaging it?
Open the book only as far as it goes comfortably, hold one page flat with your hand and capture from above with your phone. There is no need to remove pages or press the spine hard.
How many pages can I scan into one PDF?
You can add many pages in one session, but long sessions are tiring and a mistake is harder to find. Scanning chapter by chapter and joining the files later is usually more comfortable.
Can I search the text of a scanned book?
Yes, after running OCR and downloading the searchable PDF. Accuracy depends on how clear the scan is and on the language.
Which filter is best for textbook pages?
Black and white for plain text, grayscale for old or tinted paper, and color when figures and charts use color to explain something.
