How to Share a PDF as Images on Instagram or LinkedIn

Instagram does not accept PDF files in a post, so you need to convert each page into a picture first. The quickest way to make a PDF to image for Instagram is to open PDF to JPG, export the pages as JPG or PNG, and upload them as a carousel. The same images work on LinkedIn, Facebook, X and in chat groups.

This is handy for a slide deck, a price list, a menu, a certificate, a research poster or study notes. The pages become a swipeable post that people can read without downloading anything.

How to convert a PDF to images for Instagram or LinkedIn

  1. Open the PDF to JPG tool in your browser, on a phone or a computer.
  2. Add your PDF. If it is password-protected, you will be asked for the password when it opens.
  3. Choose the format: JPG or PNG.
  4. Choose the resolution: 72, 150 or 300 DPI.
  5. Export a single page, or export all pages. When you export all of them, they download together as a ZIP.
  6. Unpack the ZIP. On a phone, your file manager can usually do this with a tap. Then save the images to your gallery so the social app can see them.
  7. Create a new post, select the images in page order and publish.

PDFNova processes files in your browser, so your documents are not uploaded to a server. Only the images you choose to post leave your device.

JPG or PNG, and which DPI

These two choices decide how sharp the post looks and how heavy the files are.

Choice Result Good for
JPG Smaller files, very slight softening Pages with photos, gradients and colourful backgrounds
PNG Crisp edges, larger files Text-heavy slides, charts, logos, flat colours
72 DPI Small image, soft when zoomed Quick previews and thumbnails only
150 DPI Clear on phone screens, moderate file size Most social posts
300 DPI Very detailed, large files Small text, detailed diagrams, or when you plan to crop

For most posts, 150 DPI is a sensible start. Social platforms shrink and recompress whatever you upload, so a huge image does not always look better after posting. If the text looks soft in your first test, export again at 300 DPI.

Getting the shape right

A PDF page keeps its shape when it becomes an image. An A4 page gives a tall image, a presentation slide gives a wide one. Social feeds have their own preferred shapes, such as square or portrait, and these change from time to time. Check the crop options the app shows you when you create the post.

You have three practical options:

  • Post as it is. The app adds bars or lets you fit the whole page. Nothing is cut off, but the page looks smaller.
  • Crop in the app. This fills the frame, but anything near the edge may be lost. Check every page of the carousel, because the first crop is often applied to all of them.
  • Design for the feed from the start. If you make the document yourself, set the page to a square or portrait shape in your design or slide app before you export the PDF. This gives the cleanest result.

Going the other way, from pictures back to a standard document, is covered in our guide to converting an image to an A4 size PDF.

Pick only the pages worth posting

Carousels have a maximum number of images, and it differs between platforms. Check the limit shown in the app. A long report will not fit, and people rarely swipe through thirty pages anyway.

Before converting, cut the document down to the pages that matter. Use Split PDF to pull out a range such as 1-3, 5, 8-10, or remove the weak pages with Delete Pages. Then convert the short version. A strong first page, a few key pages and a closing page with your contact details is usually enough.

Checklist before you post

  • The text is readable on a phone without zooming. If not, the page has too much on it for a feed.
  • Nothing important sits at the very edge, where a crop could cut it.
  • The images are in the right order. ZIP files name pages in sequence, so sort by name when selecting.
  • No private details are visible, such as phone numbers, account numbers or signatures.
  • You have the right to share the content. Do not post pages from books, paid courses or other people’s documents without permission.
  • You added a caption and alt text, since words inside a picture cannot be searched or read aloud.

Images or the PDF itself

Some platforms and chat apps also let you attach a document directly. That is better when people need to download, print or zoom deeply into the file. Images are better for reach, because they show in the feed without any tap.

Remember that text in an image cannot be selected. If readers need to copy a paragraph, a link or a reference, share the real document or put the text in the caption. Our article on how to copy text from a PDF that will not let you shows how to get the words out for a caption.

Troubleshooting

The PDF will not load in the tool

The file may be damaged, incomplete or protected. Try opening it in a normal PDF viewer first. If it fails there too, work through the checks in why a PDF will not open and how to fix it.

The images look blurry after posting

Export at a higher DPI and try PNG for text pages. If the original PDF is a low quality scan, a higher DPI cannot add detail that is not there.

My phone cannot find the images

They are probably still inside the ZIP in your downloads folder. Unpack it, then move or save the pictures to your gallery.

Frequently asked questions

Can I post a PDF directly on Instagram?

Not as a feed post. Feed posts are made of photos and videos, so each PDF page has to be converted to an image first.

How do I turn a PDF into a LinkedIn carousel?

Convert the pages to JPG or PNG and upload them as a multi-image post. LinkedIn may also offer a document post option. Use whichever the app currently shows you.

What is the best resolution for PDF to JPG for social media?

150 DPI suits most posts. Choose 300 DPI when the page has small text or you intend to crop into part of it.

Does converting a PDF to images add a watermark?

No. PDFNova is free, needs no sign-up and does not add a watermark to the exported images.

Trim the document to its best pages, export them with PDF to JPG, and your PDF is ready to post as a clean, swipeable set of images.
