How to Convert WhatsApp Images to PDF

To convert a WhatsApp image to PDF, save the picture from the chat to your phone, open Image to PDF in your browser, add the photo and download the PDF. You can add many images at once, so a whole set of pages sent in a chat becomes one file. It takes about a minute and you do not need to install an app.

This is one of the most common small jobs on a phone. A teacher sends homework pages as photos, a client sends a signed form as a picture, or you photograph receipts and send them to yourself. A portal or an office then asks for a PDF, not a gallery of pictures.

First, get the pictures out of the chat

A browser tool can only use files that are stored on your device. Images you see inside a chat may or may not be in your gallery yet, depending on your media download settings.

  • If auto-download is on, the photos are normally already in your gallery, in a folder or album named after the chat app.
  • If it is off, open each image in the chat and use the save or download option in its menu.
  • On a computer, open the chat in the web or desktop version, open the image and download it. Downloading several images together may give you a ZIP folder, which you need to unpack first.

Save every page before you start. It is easier to pick ten photos in one go than to return to the chat for a missing one.

How to convert a WhatsApp image to PDF, step by step

  1. Open the Image to PDF tool in your phone browser.
  2. Tap to add files and select the saved photos. JPG and PNG images both work, and so do screenshots.
  3. Check the order of the thumbnails. Drag them until page one is first. Photos from a chat are often listed by the time they were saved, which is not always the reading order.
  4. Choose a page size: A4, Letter or fit to image.
  5. Choose portrait or landscape and set the margins.
  6. Create the PDF and download it. It saves directly to your device.

PDFNova processes files in your browser, so your documents are not uploaded to a server. That matters when the photos show an ID, a bank slip or a medical report.

Which page size should you choose

Setting What you get Use it when
A4 Every photo placed on a standard A4 page The PDF will be printed or uploaded to a university, bank or government form
Letter Every photo on a US Letter page The receiver is in a country that prints on Letter paper
Fit to image Each page takes the exact shape of its photo, with no empty space The PDF will only be read on screens, for example screenshots of a conversation

For documents, A4 with a small margin is the safest choice. If that is your goal, the guide on converting an image to an A4 size PDF goes deeper into margins and orientation.

Why WhatsApp photos sometimes look soft in a PDF

Chat apps usually shrink photos when they are sent the normal way, so they travel faster. The picture you saved may be a lighter copy of the original. Converting it to PDF does not add detail back. A PDF can only be as sharp as the image inside it.

You can avoid this in a few ways:

  • Ask the sender to share the photo as a document or file, or to use the higher quality option if their app offers one. That normally keeps the original image.
  • Ask them to make the PDF on their side and send you the PDF.
  • If the paper is in your own hands, skip the chat. Capture it with the Camera Scanner, which detects the page edges, corrects the perspective and can apply a black and white filter for cleaner text.

Tidy up before you send the PDF

A few checks make the difference between a file that is accepted and one that comes back.

  • Rotation. Sideways photos give sideways pages. Rotate the photo in your gallery before adding it.
  • Cropping. Cut away the table, fingers and background in your gallery editor, so the page fills the sheet.
  • Order. Open the finished PDF and scroll from the first page to the last.
  • Size. Many photos make a heavy file. If a form rejects it, run it through Compress PDF and use the slider to find a level where the text is still easy to read. Check the limit shown on the upload page.
  • Name. Rename the file to something clear, such as your name and the document type.

Troubleshooting

The photos do not appear in the file picker

They have not been saved to the device yet. Go back to the chat, open each picture and save it. Also check that your browser has permission to access photos and files.

The pages are in the wrong order

Drag the thumbnails before creating the PDF. If you only notice later, build the file again, since it only takes a moment.

One image will not load

The tool accepts JPG and PNG. Stickers, animated pictures and some special camera formats are different file types. Take a screenshot of that picture and add the screenshot instead.

Other ways to do it

Most phones can also make a PDF from a photo with a built-in print or share option, without any website. That works for a single picture, but it gives you little control over page size, margins and page order. Our walkthrough on converting a photo to PDF on Android compares the built-in route with the browser tool.

Sometimes you need the opposite direction, turning a document into pictures for a post or a story. For that, read how to share a PDF as images on Instagram or LinkedIn.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert multiple WhatsApp images to one PDF?

Save all the images to your phone, then select them together in the Image to PDF tool. Each photo becomes one page, and they are joined into a single PDF in the order shown in the thumbnails.

Can I convert a WhatsApp image to PDF without an app?

Yes. PDFNova runs in the browser you already have on your phone, tablet or computer. It is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark.

Can I send the PDF back on WhatsApp?

Yes. After the download, open the chat, choose to attach a document and pick the PDF from your downloads. If the file is large, compress it first.

Will the text in the photos be searchable?

No. A photo placed in a PDF is still a picture. To copy or search the words, you would need to run text recognition on the PDF afterwards.

Save the pictures, put them in order and let Image to PDF turn them into one tidy document you can upload, print or send.
